Choose Somabay if your ideal holiday starts with a beautiful beach and centres on a relaxing resort stay. Choose El Gouna if you want a coastal town to explore, with marina dinners, lively evenings, varied places to stay and boat days out on the Red Sea. Both offer excellent ways to stay active; the difference is how you want the rest of your day to feel.

That is where we begin when helping someone decide. A family travelling with young children, a couple planning a quiet break and friends looking forward to long evenings out may love different things about the same destination.

Somabay, also written Soma Bay, and El Gouna both sit on Egypt’s Red Sea coast, on opposite sides of Hurghada. Here is how we would choose between them, and what we would check before booking.

Beaches and swimming: why we lean towards Somabay

For a holiday built around going from breakfast to a beautiful beach, Somabay is our first choice. Its beach setting is one of the main reasons we recommend it for couples and families who want to settle in and enjoy their resort.

You can have a satisfying beach day without organising a boat excursion. Choose the exact hotel carefully, though: a sandy swimming beach, access to a reef by jetty and a spot used for watersports offer different experiences. A sea-view room does not tell you which one you will get. Around The Breakers, for example, the house reef is accessed by a long jetty. That can appeal to a keen snorkeller or diver, but it is a different proposition from a sandy entry for paddling with small children.

El Gouna has good beach options too. For example, The Chedi has its own natural cove beach, while Steigenberger Golf Resort has a lagoon beach. Those are different settings, and both may suit the right traveller.

When we plan El Gouna, we often recommend a boat day for the open-water scenery and offshore swimming that make the Red Sea special. It adds something to the trip; it is not a requirement for enjoying the water at all.

Before choosing a stay, ask: is swimming directly from the property, reached by shuttle, or through a separate beach club? Is access included? What is the entry into the water like, and does it suit your children or confidence in the sea? Follow local beach guidance and conditions on the day.

Where to stay in Somabay and El Gouna

Our Somabay shortlist

Kempinski Hotel Soma Bay is one of our favourite starting points for couples and families who want their holiday to revolve around the resort and beach. Its sandy beach and pools support that style of stay. We would then match the room category and location to your group rather than choose on the hotel name alone.

Sheraton Soma Bay Resort belongs on the shortlist for a beach-focused holiday too. Its current Marriott listing describes a renovated beachfront resort with a private sandy beach, pools and Soma Splash Aqua Park. We particularly like it when the beach is a major part of the decision. Check the room arrangement and activity inclusions for your dates.

ROBINSON Soma Bay is our pick to consider if sport is central to the trip and you enjoy a sociable resort routine. Its official programme includes sports and evening entertainment. Think about the activities you want to do regularly, then check inclusions and separate bookings. Somabay can be calm without every hotel having the same evening atmosphere; do not choose ROBINSON expecting every evening to be silent.

Steigenberger Resort Ras Soma is another stay we like in the wider area. Its official location is Ras Soma/Safaga, so treat it as a separate base when planning Somabay marina visits or activities. Do not assume all those outings are a walk from the hotel.

Our El Gouna shortlist

The Chedi El Gouna is one of our choices for travellers who appreciate considered design and a quieter beachfront base. It lets you combine a restful stay with selected evenings elsewhere in town.

Casa Cook El Gouna suits travellers drawn to its design and relaxed atmosphere. It is an adults-only hotel, so we would put it on a couples’ or adults’ trip shortlist rather than a young-family one. Confirm the current minimum age before booking.

Steigenberger Golf Resort El Gouna is worth considering for golf, a lagoon setting and resort facilities, with outings into town added around them. Be clear that its waterfront is a lagoon, rather than expecting the same beach experience as Somabay.

Ancient Sands Golf Resort is a useful option for travellers who want golf and a choice of accommodation layouts, including rooms and larger residences. Check the exact unit, beach arrangements and journeys to the places you expect to visit.

Villas and apartments can be a particularly good way to enjoy El Gouna with friends, family or on a longer stay. A pool, kitchen and shared living space may be more useful than another hotel facility. Look beyond photographs: confirm bedroom privacy, pool access, housekeeping, beach access and the exact neighbourhood.

Lemon Spaces is a Destynys partner and one of the accommodation options we recommend in El Gouna. Ask us about the partner rates available for your dates, and we can help identify the right space and connect it with transfers and activities. Availability and booking conditions depend on the property and stay.

We choose accommodation around the holiday you want: morning swims, time with children, quiet evenings, golf, or dinner somewhere different each night.

Restaurants, marinas and nightlife: El Gouna has the edge for us

If choosing where to eat and where to go after dinner is part of the pleasure, we would usually recommend El Gouna.

Abu Tig Marina, Fanadir Marina and Downtown give the town several different areas to explore. We love its architecture, waterfront homes and lagoons, but also the feeling of being able to build an evening around a walk, dinner and another stop that suits your mood. El Gouna’s marina guide

For a starting shortlist, consider Pier 88 around Abu Tig Marina, Villa Caracas at Fanadir Marina or Zia Amelia Downtown, depending on the food and setting you want. These are examples to check for your dates, not a promise of a particular table or event. El Gouna’s current dining guide

Somabay offers resort dining, its marina and hotel entertainment. Kokomo at Somabay Marina, for example, centres its menu on cooking over fire. We like Somabay when a good dinner close to your room sounds appealing. El Gouna is our stronger choice when you want more variety outside the resort and a fuller nightlife itinerary.

The right reservation still depends on the occasion. A family dinner, a couple’s evening and a group celebration need different settings. Tell us about children’s ages, dietary needs, music preferences and the atmosphere you enjoy; we can recommend places and arrange reservation requests around the rest of your day.

Activities: both destinations reward an active itinerary

Somabay’s relaxed reputation should not hide how much there is to do. Kitesurfing, diving, golf, tennis and go-karting can all shape a stay. Its activity directory and tennis information are useful starting points for checking current options.

El Gouna also works well for kitesurfing, diving, golf and go-karting, with cable wakeboarding at Sliders adding another option. Sliders has beginner instruction as well as facilities for more experienced riders. It is easy to build a trip that combines sport with restaurants and evenings out.

The useful differences are more specific than “both have watersports.” Somabay has house-reef diving as well as boat diving, with options described by ORCA Dive Club. For kitesurfing, 7Bft KiteHouse describes side-offshore conditions, while El Gouna centres describe shallow areas affected by tides. Choose the school, supervision and exact spot around your level; flat-looking water is not the whole picture. 7Bft KiteHouse, Duotone Pro Center El Gouna

Golfers can compare Somabay’s Gary Player course and practice options with El Gouna’s Steigenberger and Ancient Sands settings. Beginners may prefer a lesson or short-format session to a full round. Check the facilities operating for your dates: newly announced courses should not be treated as already open. Somabay Golf

For beginners, the instructor, lesson format and conditions matter more than choosing a destination with the longest activity list. For experienced travellers, we would plan around your preferred sport and how much time you actually want to spend doing it.

Reserve key sessions in advance, confirm age or experience requirements and leave space between activities. Destynys can arrange the sessions you want, as well as golf, spa time or a celebration, within an itinerary that still feels like a holiday.

El Gouna boat trips: Bayoud, Tawila and Dolphin House

A boat day is one of our favourite additions to El Gouna. Bayoud, Tawila and Dolphin House are among the routes travellers ask us about, but we would not treat them as an interchangeable excursion or promise them all in one outing.

Tell us what you want from the day: more swimming, a particular island, snorkelling, a relaxed family outing or time together with friends. We can then recommend a suitable boat and proposed route, with the operator confirming conditions, access and the day’s plan.

  • Bayoud: think of an offshore area reached by boat, rather than a town beach you can walk to. Confirm whether you are booking a private leisure charter, a shared outing or a kite-support trip; those are different products. An operator’s Bayoud description
  • Tawila: confirm whether the arrangement includes an island landing or simply time on the water nearby. The island’s official day-use offer separates access from transportation, so a boat booking alone should not be assumed to include the island’s facilities.
  • Dolphin House: confirm the exact site and treat wildlife sightings as a possibility. Choose an approach that respects dolphins and never chases or crowds them. Responsible dolphin encounters: CDWS

Before confirming, check the departure point, time on board, shade, toilet facilities, swimming equipment, suitability for your group and what is included. Weather may change the plan, so leave some flexibility in your stay.

Getting there and getting around

Hurghada International Airport is the usual arrival airport for both destinations. El Gouna lies to the north; Somabay lies to the south. Airport transfer time should be checked against the exact hotel or rental address.

As a planning guide, allow roughly 30–45 minutes by road to El Gouna and 45–60 minutes to Somabay after departure from the airport. These are estimates, not guaranteed journey times, and exclude immigration, luggage collection and waiting. El Gouna’s official visitor guide describes an approximately 30-minute transfer, while Kempinski describes approximately 45 minutes to its Somabay hotel. El Gouna arrival guide, Kempinski transport information

Somabay can feel convenient when your hotel, beach and chosen activities are close together. Some outings still need a shuttle or car. In El Gouna, walking works well within individual areas, while journeys between neighbourhoods may be easier by local transport. Heat, luggage, pushchairs and mobility needs all change what feels like an easy walk.

Destynys can arrange airport transfers to either destination and the return journey. Share your flight details, exact accommodation, party size, luggage and any child-seat or accessibility requirements so we can confirm a suitable arrangement.

When to visit and how long to stay

Spring and autumn are our useful starting points for a trip mixing beach time, activities and evenings out. Summer calls for more shade, earlier sporting sessions and a quieter middle of the day. In winter, consider wind, cooler evenings and whether a heated pool matters to you. Both destinations share the wider Red Sea climate; your dates and priorities matter more than expecting dramatically different weather between them. El Gouna seasonal guidance

For kitesurfing, diving or a boat-led trip, check local conditions with the operator. A sunny forecast does not guarantee suitable wind or sea conditions for every activity.

For a first visit, three or four nights in one destination is our suggested starting point. Allow longer if you want several lessons, repeated diving days or substantial downtime. On a short break, changing hotels can take too much time out of the holiday. With a week or more, we can explore whether splitting your stay adds enough variety to be worthwhile.

A relaxed three-night Somabay stay

  • Arrival day: transfer, settle into the resort, beach if timing allows, and dinner nearby.
  • First full day: an unhurried beach morning, then choose one activity such as tennis, golf or a lesson. Keep the rest flexible.
  • Second full day: diving or another activity if that is a priority, otherwise more beach time; a marina visit or a favourite resort restaurant in the evening.
  • Departure day: breakfast and a transfer planned around your flight.

A varied three-night El Gouna stay

  • Arrival day: settle in, then choose a marina or Downtown for a first evening out.
  • First full day: a boat day if conditions allow, followed by time to rest before dinner.
  • Second full day: a favourite sport or beach morning, a look around town, and an evening in a different area.
  • Departure day: a slow breakfast if the flight allows, then your airport transfer.

These are suggested rhythms, not fixed packages. Keep the boat day movable and avoid placing an excursion immediately before a flight.

The details worth deciding before you book

For families, start with children’s ages, room layout, walking distances, the pool and the actual beach entry. For couples, decide whether privacy and quiet or evenings out matter more. For friends, consider shared space, bedroom arrangements and how people will get home from dinner. For solo travellers, think about whether you want an active resort routine or the freedom to explore a town.

If step-free access, dietary requirements or a particular room setup matters, ask about the specific property and activity. A destination description cannot confirm those details.

Neither destination is automatically better value for every trip. Compare like-for-like accommodation, meal plans, beach access, local transport and the activities you will really use. An appealing room offer is less useful if the location makes your preferred days inconvenient.

This is the work Destynys brings together: selecting the right base, recommending experiences that fit, making a realistic itinerary and coordinating the arrangements. You can ask us to plan the whole trip or help with the parts you need.

Frequently asked questions

Is Somabay or El Gouna better for beaches?

Somabay is our preference for a holiday centred on resort beach time. El Gouna also has beach stays, but check the specific beach or lagoon access. A boat day is a rewarding addition for offshore scenery and swimming, rather than a requirement for every swim.

Which is better for nightlife and restaurants?

We prefer El Gouna for variety across its marinas and Downtown. Somabay is a good fit for travellers happy with resort dining, marina visits and a quieter evening routine, although the atmosphere differs by hotel.

Which is better for families or couples?

Both can work. Somabay suits families and couples who want a beach-focused resort stay. El Gouna suits those who want more variety outside their accommodation. Match the hotel to the group: Casa Cook El Gouna is adults-only.

Can I stay in a villa or apartment?

Yes. El Gouna is particularly appealing if you want the flexibility of a villa or apartment alongside restaurants and activities around town. Destynys can also explore rentals in Somabay. Confirm the exact property’s facilities and access rather than assuming hotel-style inclusions.

Do I need a car?

Not necessarily. Airport transfers and selected local journeys can be arranged separately. Choose your base around your plans, and check walking distances rather than assuming either destination is entirely walkable.

Can Destynys help if I already booked my hotel?

Yes. You can request airport transfers, a boat day, activities, restaurant or beach-club reservations, or another relevant concierge service without asking us to plan the entire stay.

Can I visit both on one trip?

Yes, but on a short break we usually favour enjoying one base properly. With more time, a split stay can combine Somabay’s beaches with El Gouna’s town life. We can plan the order and transfer around your flights and priorities.
